There are two ways on how to instal Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 driver. One is using the Ubuntu software solution. Just search for nvidia. It will show a list of software/packages that you can download and install in your computer. The alternative way is to download the driver from the nvidia website and install it locally.
To start, download the latest driver for your nvidia from the nvidia website. It will be ended with a .run.
Tip: click here to go to the download page for Nvidia driver for linux 32 bit.
After you downloaded the driver, paste it on the desktop for easy look up.
Before installing the driver, you need to be in terminal mode. To be in terminal mode, press ctrl+alt+F1 to shift into terminal mode. When you are in terminal mode, login with your username and password.
Now you are ready to install the driver. The first step is to stop the x server. To stop it, you need to type in this code.
sudo etc/init.d/dbm stopwith the code above, it will stop the x server from running. When you have done that, go to the desktop by entering this code.
cd DesktopAnd run the driver with this code
sudo sh nvidia_driver_name.runWhen you enter the code above, you will be guided by a gui to install the driver and when you are finished. You can start the x server again.
sudo etc/init.d/dbm startCongratulations! You have installed your Nvidia driver. For concerns, be free to leave a comment.
Reminder: The Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 can't activate or run the unity feature for ubuntu and most importantly is that the local installation method or offline method for installing the driver is the last resort in installing the driver. I recommend that you still install the driver from the software center from the ubuntu.
